(3) Part-time Work Permission(Shikakugai katsudo kyoka)
International students on a "student visa" are generally not allowed to hold part-time jobs. If for any reason, a paid work is necessary to cover expenses, you must first obtain a work permit because employment is considered an activity outside of your visa status. Teaching/Research Assistants on campus don't require a work permit.
Since all international students must prove they have sufficient financial support prior to coming to Japan, students are advised not to start working immediately after arrival.
The amount of work time allowed is up to 28 hours/week (8 hours/day during vacation).
It is necessary to change your visa status when you change activities. For example, if you have another status of visa and expect to enroll in a university, you will need to have a "college student" visa. You are also required to change the visa status when you find work in Japan after graduation/completion.
You are NOT allowed to stay in Japan after graduation or completion of your research with "college student" visa. Therefore, you' ll need to change your visa status again if you desire to stay in Japan.
Any application for a visa extension, re-entry permit, or part-time work permit will need to be submitted to the local immigration office by yourself. The application forms are available at the International Office. Please feel free, however, to ask the International Office staff any questions regarding these applications.
